Mark’s Biography

Mark obtained his PhD in 1990 under the guidance of Professor Melvyn V. Sargent at the University of Western Australia. He then moved to the USA and spent 2 years as a postdoctoral fellow in the research group of Professor Robert E. Ireland at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. In early 1993, he returned to Australia to begin his appointment as a lecturer in the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne. He was promoted to senior lecturer in 1997, Associate Professor and Reader in 2003 and full Professor in 2008. Over the last 3 decades Mark has made significant contributions to the field of complex natural product total synthesis, which has been recognised through his publications in high impact journals and being the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including the RACI Rennie Memorial Medal in 1997, the 2005 Organic Reactions Lectureship and the prestigious RACI A. J. Birch medal in 2010.
